Family History

Status:Active, open to new members
Group leaders:
Laurence Cole
Group email: Family History group
When: Monthly on Monday mornings 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Usually the first Monday of the month
Venue: Hoddesdon Methodist Church

The group aims to assist members to research their Family History by getting to know the various resources which are available. We have also planned visits to local archives etc, as well as investigated internet resources.

We meet once a month to share our knowledge and experience of Family History matters and relate many anecdotes about our investigations of Family and Social History. As a group we are always willing to help both new and experienced members with their research and regularly use a laptop with the LVu3a projector to link to online sites to help people break through their ‘brick walls’. So, we spend quite a bit of time at meetings hearing from other members about their family history experiences. This is often quite fascinating and frequently helps inspire you to follow up other aspects of your own family tree!

From time-to-time some members will talk more formally about a family history topic. This year (2026) we have been talking about DNA, including our experiences of using it to assist in family history research.

Meetings take place on the first Monday morning in each month, (except for Bank Holiday Mondays) at the Hoddesdon Methodist Church Hall, Middlefield Rd., Hoddesdon, EN11 9ED.

Usually for our Christmas (December) meeting we engage an external speaker on a family history topic and have “Christmas Nibbles” at the end of the meeting.

To ensure sufficient money is to hand, to pay for the hall hire and a speaker, there is a fixed annual group membership fee, which is currently £18 per person (2026).
